  • As part of Metrovacesa’s commitment to sustainability, this agreement reinforces policies to promote decarbonisation and the circular economy in its projects.

  • The developer’s agreement is materialised in the fact that the developments will have windows manufactured by TECHNAL with Hydro CIRCAL® 75R

  • The carbon footprint produced by this aluminium is only 1.86 kg CO2 per kilogram, which is 78 % less than the European average.

  • Joinery systems will also have the option of Hydro CIRCAL® 100R, recycled polyamides or Cradle to Cradle certification, which assesses the circularity of the product.

Madrid, 27 February 2023. Metrovacesa, Spain’s leading real estate developer with more than 100 years of history and more than 150 projects under development nationwide, formalises its collaboration with Technal, a leading company in the design and manufacture of aluminium carpentry. The agreement consists of incorporating into Metrovacesa’s developments windows manufactured from Hydro CIRCAL® 75R, a recycled aluminium ingot produced from at least 75% post-consumer scrap.

With this initiative, the developer seeks to reduce the environmental impact during the construction process, as well as reducing CO2 emissions and reinforcing its commitment to the circular economy.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Metrovacesa will incorporate in its developments recycled raw materials generated through the foundries of the Hydro Group, to which Technal belongs. During this process, the Norwegian group manufactures aluminium from different products whose useful life has come to an end, giving them a second life in construction in the form of new products, thus reducing the generation of construction waste.

In addition to these materials, the joinery systems can also be equipped with Hydro CIRCAL® 100R on request, which achieves a footprint reduction of up to 0.5 kg CO2 per kilogram of aluminium. In addition, they can include recycled polyamides in their joinery or certify the windows under the international Cradle to Cradle standard, which evaluates the circularity of the product.

Metrovacesa’s collaboration with Technal is part of its efforts to promote sustainable construction, focusing a large part of its policies on the analysis of carbon footprint emissions in order to subsequently devise strategies to reduce them.

David Sierra Llunch, director of projects and sustainability at Metrovacesa, states that “at Metrovacesa we continue to be committed to collaborating with companies that are environmentally aware and leaders in their sector. We are committed to the implementation of this type of solutions at a national level that help us to reduce the carbon footprint of our developments in order to move towards the total decarbonisation of our projects”.

For his part, the director of the TECHNAL Spain business unit, Ferran Xipell, welcomes the fact that “a company like Metrovacesa, a leader in its sector, wants to be a benchmark in the field of sustainability”. In his opinion, “this represents that Hydro is doing things right in terms of sustainability”. “Recycled aluminium has been on the market for decades, but Hydro CIRCAL® 75R post-consumer aluminium provides that extra with a minimal CO2 footprint, only 1.86 kg CO2 per kg aluminium. We are definitely evolving towards an urban mining concept,” he says.

Decarbonisation of the real estate sector

Metrovacesa’s agreement with Technal is one of a number of agreements under its commitment to sustainability. In addition to using recycled and recyclable materials, the developer certifies all its new developments with sustainability seals and assesses the carbon footprint of the life cycle of its developments through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology.
