14 November 2023. The certification body BREEAM® has signed a collaboration agreement with Metrovacesa, one of the leading developers of new buildings in the real estate market and the one with the largest portfolio of liquid land in the Spanish market. The signing of the agreement was made official at the headquarters of the Instituto Tecnológico de Galicia (ITG), national operator of BREEAM® certification in Spain, in the presence of Javier Torralba, Managing Director of BREEAM® ES, and Mariú Rodríguez, Land Manager of Metrovacesa’s Northern Zone.

This agreement is materialised in Metrovacesa’s commitment to certify its most relevant urban developments with BREEAM® ES Urbanism.

“This agreement is a boost for sustainability in the real estate market and we are very proud to be able to collaborate with a leading company in the sector such as Metrovacesa. At BREEAM® we have the tools to build environments that respect the planet and people, but without the support and commitment of companies in the sector, it would be impossible to put our methodology into practice”, said Javier Torralba after signing the agreement. “In addition, we will have the experience of Metrovacesa on our Advisory Board, contributing its vision to further develop sustainable certification in Spain”.

Mariú Rodríguez emphasised that “at Metrovacesa we are strategically committed to more sustainable construction right from urban planning. Along these lines, we have initiated the BREEAM® ES Urban Planning certification process for the Labañou Special Plan, a project that would be the first residential neighbourhood in the Galician community to obtain this comprehensive and internationally recognised environmental sustainability certification”.

The purpose of this agreement is to continue promoting sustainability and the application of BREEAM® certification in the real estate market, the most demanding and widespread sustainability seal worldwide. To this end, both entities will contribute their presence and experience in the sector to disseminate the benefits of applying environmentally and socially responsible measures in buildings and urban developments.

Metrovacesa, which considers sustainability criteria to be one of the essential pillars of its activity, will continue to use the BREEAM® Urban Planning methodology for its most important urban development projects.

In addition, the signing of the agreement also includes the institutional linking of both entities, as Metrovacesa now forms part of the group of companies in the real estate sector that make up the BREEAM® Advisory Council in Spain, a consultative body made up of companies from all areas of the building industry (construction companies, developers, engineering firms and consultancies, among others) that help to define the strategy of the BREEAM® methodology in the market.
