Madrid, 20 June 2024. The sixth edition of the MADRID CITIES FORUM, held at IFEMA as part of the V ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY FORUM-FSMSand the TECMA 2024 trade fair, concluded on 20 June after 1,200 attendees, 190 speakers, and representatives from 50 Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American cities, who participated in the 32 round tables organised around urban planning, renaturalisation and circular economy.

Metrovacesa was present at the session “Future city: participation and sustainability” where our head of Sustainable Urban Development, Almudena Cano, presented the urban innovation model that we apply in some of our most important urban development projects. Miguel Baiget, Deputy Director General of Land, Information and Evaluation of the General Directorate of Housing and Land of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, Candelaria Testa, Mayor of Alcorcón, José María Ezquiaga, founding partner of Ezquiaga, Architecture, Society and Territory, and Luis Martín de Ciria, Director of Communication, Institutional Relations and Social Commitment of Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte, also took part in the round table, which focused on the fundamental role played by citizens in the design of the environment.

All of them highlighted the fundamental role that citizens play in the design of the urban environment for the environmental, economic and social sustainability of our cities. In this regard, our Head of Sustainable Urban Development, Almudena Cano, explained the model of sustainable urban innovation that we have been working on for a couple of years in some of the most important projects of its extensive portfolio of land under development of almost 5 million square metres.

Almudena pointed out that “Metrovacesa is strengthening its commitment to the local communities where it works through the Sustainable Urban Development department. Our main objective is to better respond to the urban and social reality where we operate, as well as to open new channels of communication with citizens to let them know about our projects, involve them in their progress and, above all, develop the best ideas, practices and solutions to the great challenge of urban sustainability”. This work of citizen participation has resulted in more than 4,000 participants in a hundred face-to-face meetings and collaboration with more than 220 local entities.

With its participation in this roundtable, Metrovacesa has brought its commitment to sustainable urban development to the benchmark forum in Spain for rethinking the future of our cities, which has the involvement of organisations such as the Madrid City Council, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU), the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MITMA), the Ministries of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU), Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), and Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MITMA), and the URBACT and EUI programmes, the Cencyl Cities network and the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities, UCCI.
